1. Deeply Rooted Sustainability: Our Plantation in Chiang Mai

For many companies, production begins at the wholesaler. For us, it begins in the soil.

We have been making games and puzzles from Samanea wood since 1995, back when we still bought it from local sawmills. Demand quickly grew for this special wood, which stands out with its characteristic three-tone wood grain. Many recognized the wood of the Rain Tree as a beautiful and fascinating material. However, we quickly realized: in the near future, this wood could become scarce or only available at overpriced rates.

We therefore decided to invest in the future of games – and thus in our future and the future of our fans. We established our own plantation and planted our first Samanea trees around the year 2008.

On our plantation in northern Thailand – near the historic city of Chiang Mai – we have been laying the foundation for all our games ever since. Through controlled cultivation on our own land, we preserve valuable resources, protect natural virgin forests, and guarantee complete transparency right from the first seedling. As a first step, we produce our very own raw material.

When hearing terms like "tropical wood" or "Rain Tree," many people instantly think of protected virgin rainforests. We can completely reassure you here: The Samanea Saman is NOT a rainforest tree!

It is what is known as a synanthropic species (cultivation follower). It grows naturally where people are – in gardens, parks, along roadsides, and especially on purpose-built plantations. On our land, we cultivate it as an extremely fast-growing crop.

You can think of the Samanea tree almost like a giant bamboo: where other hardwoods take decades or centuries, this tree grows back at an astonishing pace, reaching its full size in just a few short years. As a legume, it even enriches the soil with natural nitrogen through its root system.

How the Tree Got the Name "Monkey Pod"

In many English-speaking regions, the wood of the Samanea Saman is referred to as "Monkey Pod" (or Suar wood). Where does this curious name come from?

• The Sweet Pods: The tree forms curved, elongated seed pods. Once ripe, they contain a sticky, sweet pulp.

• The Monkey Favorite: Monkeys living in the treetops love these sweet pods and delight in picking them – hence the name "Monkey Pod". Historically, the genus was scientifically named Pithecellobium, which translates from Greek as "monkey's earring".

The Secret of the 3 Colors in the Wood

Owning a plantation is one thing – managing it sustainably and respectfully is another. Our trees are carefully nurtured over many years. Once a tree reaches its optimal maturity, the most demanding part of the entire process begins: the harvest.

Why Felling a Rain Tree is a High-Precision Task

You cannot simply "chop down" a fully grown Samanea tree like a pine tree in the forest. Due to its massive footprint – with branches weighing multiple tons and spanning over 40 meters across – the uncontrolled fall of such a giant would not only shatter the valuable timber itself, but also severely damage the soil and surrounding young trees.

For this reason, we employ specialized climbing and harvesting teams who often take several days up to two full weeks to carefully dismantle a single tree:

1. Securing & Pruning from Top to Bottom: The harvesting team secures themselves high up in the treetops. Piece by piece, the giant, heavy branches are sawed off from the outer edges inward.

2. Lowering via Pulley System: To prevent multi-ton branches from crashing unchecked to the ground, they are attached to heavy-duty rope systems, controlled, cut, and gently lowered to the soil.

3. Step-by-Step Trunk Dismantling: Only after the massive crown has been completely and gently removed is the main trunk sectioned from top to bottom into manageable, solid timber blocks.

Through this cautious dismantling from the branch tips down to the base, we ensure that virtually no part of the tree goes to waste. Instead of using only the thick trunk pieces, our teams also utilize the sturdy branch forks and smaller limbs. Through clever cutting techniques, we ensure that this precious natural material is fully repurposed for our smaller puzzles, game pieces, and mechanical components.
